Nervous System Function Flashcards
supporting cells.
made of neuroglia (nerve glue) and each cell has its own job.
what are Astrocytes?
they are star shaped cells that
Form a barrier between capillaries and neurons and aid in the exchanges between the two.
it also control chemical environment in the brain by absorbing excess ions and neurotransmitters.
what are Microglia?
cells that are spider shaped phagocytes. (garbage disposal)
what are Ependyma?
line cavities of the brain and spinal cord. cilia on these cells circulates cerebrospinal fluid (forms a protective cushion around the cns.)
what are Oligodendrocytes?
Wrap their flat extensions tightly around the nerve fibers, producing fatty insulating coverings called myelin sheaths.
Schwann Cells
forms the myelin sheath around nerve fibers in the pns.
what is a Satellite?
act as protective cushioning cells and maintain electrolyte balance.
somatic nervous system
The somatic nervous system consists of nerves that go to the skin and muscles and is involved in conscious activities.
autonomic nervous system
The autonomic nervous system consists of nerves that connect the CNS to the visceral organs such as the heart, stomach, and intestines. It mediates unconscious activities.
white matter
myelinated nerve cells that result in faster nerve signals.(240mph)
grey matter
unmyelinated and much slower nerve impulses. (1-4mph)
what happens to nerve cells with age/development?
as we repeat actions white matter is formed and strengthened with age. grey matter can become white matter.
