Anatomy and Structural Organization of the nervous system Flashcards
what are the two structures that make up the cns?
The brain and spinal chord.
what is a sensory neuron?
outside impulses (eg skin, eyes, etc) towards the inside. (CNS)
what is a motor neuron?
impulses from the CNS to the outside. (muscular movement)
what is a dendrite?
dender meaning branch making it the branching part of the nerve cell.
what is the cell body of a neuron?
surrounding the nucleus, it is the space superficial to the dendrite.
what is an axon?
where electrical impulses from the neuron travel away to be received by other neurons. it is the thin chain like protrusion from the cell body.
what is a Schwann cell?
forms the myelin sheath which insulates the cell and makes nerve impulses faster and appears as the “links” for the axon.
what is the axon terminal?
the connection between neurons found at the opposite end of the axon from the cell body.
what is the Nodes of Ranvier
space between schwann cells.
