Q

Tick Paralysis

A
  • Common dog tick: Dermacentor Variabilis
  • flaccid, ascending motor paralysis
  • Remove tick, resolution in 1-3 days
17
Q

Facial Nerve Paralysis

A
  • Idiopathic, acute facial nerve paralysis
  • Cranial Nerve 7
  • Supportive care
18
Q

Rabies

A
  • Bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes serve as reservoirs
  • Spread via saliva of infected animal
  • Enters via bite, open wound, or MM
  • Prodromal: changes in behavior
  • Excitatative: hyper-active
  • Paralytic: ascending paralysis leading to respiratory failure and death
  • Difficulty swallowing, ptyalism
19
Q

Rabies Protocol

A
  • Vaccinated animals exposed: revaccinate and quarantine
  • Unvaccinated animal exposed: euthanasia or quarantine for 6 months
  • Human bitten: 10 day quarantines
