Endocrine Diseases Flashcards
1
Q
Hypothyroidism
A
- middle aged dogs
- weight gain, alopecia, cold intolerant, “tragic face”
- Thyroid panel
2
Q
Euthyroid Sick Syndrome
A
- Another illness is present, caused the thyroid to decrease activity to compensate
- total T4 is low but not due to thyroid; due to sickness.
- Levothyroxine
3
Q
Hyperthyroidism
A
- Middle-aged to older cats
- Weight loss, PU/PD/PP, vomiting, tachycardia, behavior changes
- palpable thyroid nodule
- increased T4
- Methimazole
4
Q
Parathyroid Disease
A
- Secretes PTH
- Primary hyperparathyroidism in older dogs, increased blood calcium levels, and decreased phosphorus
- Hypoparathyroidism causes low calcium and high phosphorous levels
5
Q
Puerperal Tetany (Eclampsia)
A
- Eclampsia
- small breed dogs in early lactation
- muscle tremors, seizures
- Low calcium levels and low glucose levels
- slow infusion of 10% calcium gluconate
- Too fast infusion can cause bradycardia
6
Q
Diabetes Mellitus
A
- Beta cells stop producing insulin
- Weight loss, PU/PD/PP
- Glucosuria
7
Q
Intermediate Insulin
A
-NPH, lente
8
Q
Long acting Insulin
A
-Glargine, PZI, Detemir
9
Q
Diabetic Ketoacidosis
A
- Uncontrolled diabetic
- Concurrent infections such as pancreatitis or UTI’s
- Body utilizes fat for energy, ketonemia and ketonuria develops
- Can smell DKA on breath
10
Q
Insulinoma
A
- Functional tumor of beta cells
- results in hypoglycemia
- middle age to older dogs, ferrets
- weakness, ataxia, seizures
- high insulin/low glucose
- prognosis is poor
11
Q
Hypoadrenocorticism
A
- Addison’s
- middle-aged dogs
- Low levels of cortisol
- Na:K ratio less than 27:1
- Depression, GI signs, PU/PD, bradycardia
- Adrenal gland can not respond to ACTH stim test and levels will be flat and the pre-level
- DOCP injections
12
Q
Hyperadrenocorticism
A
- Cushing’s
- Too much cortisol
- middle-aged to older dogs
- Potbelly, alopecia, recurrent infections
- LDDST and HDDST
- Vetoryl (Trilostane)
- Selegiline (Anipryl)
