Nervous system Flashcards
Alzheimer’s Dosease
Brain disorder marked by deterioration of mental capacity of
Cerebrovascular accident
Damage to the blood vessels of the cerebrum leading to loss of blood supply to brain tissue
Concussion
TBI that can cause bruising, damage to blood vessels, and injury to nerves. Loss of consciousness may occur.
Epilepsy
Chronic brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.
Glioblastoma
Malignant brain tumor arising from glial cells. BLAST means immature
Hemiplegia
Paralysis that affects that right of left half of the body.
Meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges
Multiple Aclerosis
Destruction of the myelin sheath on nerve cells in the central nervous system with replacement by plaques of sclerotic tissues
Paraplegia
Paralysis that affects on the lower portion
Synscope
Fairing. Sudden and temporary loss of consciousness as a result of innaqequate flow of blood to the brain.
Cerebral Angiography
X-ray imaging of the blood vessels in the brains after the injection of contrast material into an artery
Cerebrospinal Fluid Analysis
CSF chemical tests cell counts, cultures, and bacterial smears on samples of CSF to detect diseases of the brain or meninges. A lumbar puncture is used to remove CSF for analysis
Computed Tomography Scan
Cross sectional X-ray images of the brain and spinal cord
Electroencephalography EEG
Recording of the electrical activity within the brain
Lumbar puncture
Introduction of hollow needle into a space surrounding the spinal cord to withdraw CSF for analysis. Pressure of CSF is measured and contrast may be injected for imaging. Aka spinal tap
