Nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
Peripheral nervous system
A
All other nerves to extremities and organs
2
Q
Sensory neurones
A
carry messages from the peripheral sensory organs to the cns
3
Q
Motor neurones
A
convey instructions from the cns to the effector organs such as muscles or glands
4
Q
Reflex arc
A
Stimulus → Receptor → Sensory neurone → Relay neurone → Motor neurone → Effector → Response
5
Q
Synapse
A
- Action potential arrives at the end of the presynaptic neurone
- Calcium channels open, calcium ions enter the synaptic knob
- Influx of calcium ions causes synaptic vessicles to fuse with the presynaptic membrane, releasing ACh into the synaptic cleft
- ACh molecules bind with receptor sites on the sodium ion channel on membrane on postsynaptic membrane
- Causes sodium channels to open allowing sodium ions to diffuse in rapidly
- Influx of sodium ions generates a new action potential in the postsynaptic neurone
