Nervous system Flashcards
What is the central nervous system?
- made up of brain and spinal cord
- acts as body’s control centre, coordinates body’s activities
- made up of neurons
What is the peripheral nervous system?
- made up of all the nerves that carry messages to and from the CNS
- both systems work together to make rapid changes in the body
What are the parts of the PNS?
Somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
What is the brainstem?
Controls involuntary activities such as heart rate and breathing. Also connecting various parts of the brain.
What are the parts of a neuron?
Dendrites, cell body, nucleus, myelin sheath, axon terminal
What are the different types of neurons
Sensory neurons, interneurons and motor neurons.
Compare sensory and motor neurons
Sensory - carries sensory impulses from sensory organs to the CNS
Motor - carries motor impulses from the CNS to specific effectors
What is the Myelin Sheath?
A sleeve thats wrapped around each nerve cell. A protective layer of fat and protein that coats the main body section of a neuron call the axon.
