Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Central Nervous System?
A
- the brain and spinal cord
2
Q
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
A
- all nerves outside the brain and spinal cord
- communicates information from the body’s glands, muscles and organs to the brain
- and then to communicate information from the body’s glands, muscles and organs to the brain
3
Q
Somatic Nervous System
A
- communicates messages from the brain to skeletal muscles
- communicates messages from senses to the brain
4
Q
Motor Neurons
A
communicates messages from the CNS to the particular muscle that an organism intends to move
5
Q
Sensory Neurons
A
communicates messages from the senses to the CNS so our brain can interact with the environment
6
Q
Autonomic Nervous System
A
- controls non skeletal muscles (heart, pupils), internal organs and glands
-the organs that carry out functions related to survival (digestion and heartbeat)
7
Q
Parasympathetic NS
A
Rest and Digest
- calms our body down : returns it to homeostasis
- constricts pupils
- slows heartbeat
- constricts airway
8
Q
Sympathetic NS
A
Fight or Flight
- prepares us for action
- dilate pupils
- increases heartbeat
- relaxes airway
9
Q
Interneurons
A
messages in brain and spinal cord
helps transmit information from sensory neurons and motor neurons
