Lobes Flashcards
1
Q
Frontal Lobe
A
- largest lobe
- responsible for problem solving, personality, decision making and production of speech (Broca’s area)
- contains Primary motor cortex - voluntary movement
2
Q
Parietal Lobe
A
- upper back half of brain
- responsible for direction, spatial awareness and processing sensory information
- contains primary somatosensory cortex
3
Q
Primary Somatosensory Cortex
A
- receives and processes information about touch, temperature and position of muscles. Each body part has a larger or smaller section
4
Q
Occipital Lobe
A
- dedicated to vision
- left lobe receives information from the right visual field
- right lobe receives information from the left visual field
- contains primary visual cortex
5
Q
Temporal Lobe
A
- located next to ears
- responsible for hearing and language comprehension
- recognises faces, songs, places and paintings
- contains primary auditory cortex
6
Q
Thalamus
A
the arrival place for sensory information and then is replayed to a certain area of the somatosensory cortex
7
Q
Hypothalamus
A
regulates body temperature, appetite, thirst and hormones
8
Q
Hippocampus
A
responsible for making new memories and also the direction finder/navigator
9
Q
Pineal Gland
A
controls our internal body clock, regulates sleep/wake cycle and releases melatonin
10
Q
Amygdala
A
associated with fear and anger and plays a key role in our emotional responses
11
Q
Left Hemisphere
A
- right side of the body
- speech, language and comprehension
- analysis and calculations
- time and sequencing
- recognition of words, letters and numbers
12
Q
Right Hemisphere
A
- left side of body
- creativity
- spatial ability
- context/perception
- recognition of faces, places and objects
13
Q
Broca’s area
A
- left frontal lobe
- coordinates movements of muscles required for production of speech
- production of fluent speech
14
Q
Wernicke’s area
A
- left temporal lobe
- comprehension of speech
- interprets the sound of human speech
- making our speech coherent
