Brain Damage Flashcards
Brain Injury
Brain injury is damage that impairs or interferes with the normal functioning of the brain.
Plasticity
The ability of the brain to change in response to experience.
- brain recovering after it has been damaged
- connections between the neurons are changed. the neurons around the damaged neuron find connections with the undamaged ones to from a new pathway.
Development Plasticity
Structrual
Natural changes in all people’s brains as we mature older and have new experiences
Adaptive Plasticity
Functional
Ability of the brain to compensate for lost function in the event of brain injury. (Brain changes if we learn something new)
Synaptogenesis
Formation of synapses between neurons in the nervous system
Rerouting
An undamaged neuron that has lost connection with an active neuron may seek a new active neuron to connect with
Sprouting
Growth of axon and dendrite branches to enable to make new connections
Broca’s aphasia
Damage to the Broca’s area - difficult to produce fluent speech
Wernickle’s aphasia
Damage to Wernickle’s area - difficult to create comprehension and interpretation of speech
