Communication Flashcards
Axon
transfers electrical impulse from body to synapse
Dendrite
receives electrical impulses on the receptor site.
Axon terminal
release of messages
Soma
cell body
Myelin
cover on the axon and insulates electrical signals allowing quicker movement
Neurotransmitters
chemicals that neurons use to communicate with each other
- messages are passed through the synaptic gap
- released through the axon terminal through to the synaptic gap then to the dendrite
Electrochemical messaging
neurons passing messages
- inside the neuron the message is electrical
- outside the neuron the message is in chemical form
Synaptic gap
the space between two neurons.
What is a nerve?
a bundle of axons
What is a neuron?
an individual nerve cell that the entire nervous system is made of
Difference between excitatory and inhibitory
Excitatory = means post synaptic is more likely to fire
Inhibitory = means post synaptic is less likely to fire
Electrochemical and neuron messaging
Neurons passing messages is an electrochemical message.
- inside the neuron the message is electrical (impulse
- outside the neuron the message is in chemical form (neurotransmitter)
