Nervous System Flashcards
(36 cards)
What are the three parts of the diencephalon?
- hypothalamus
- thalamus
- pineal gland (part of the epithalamus)
What are the three parts of the brain stem?
- midbrain
- pons
- medulla oblongata
what are the major parts of the CNS?
- cerebrum
- diencephalon
- brain stem
- cerebellum
- central canal
- spinal cord
- pituitary gland
What are the 3 dural folds?
- falx cerebri (in the longitudinal fissure)
- tentorium cerebelli (between the occipital and temporal lobes)
- falx cerebelli
What are the three meningeal layers?
- dura mater
- arachnoid mater
— subarachnoid space filled with CSF - pia mater
Where is CSF produced?
- choroid plexus of ventricles of the brain
- surrounds whole of CNS (brain and spinal cord)
What happens when CSF doesn’t return to circulation?
- condition called hydrocephalus
- catheter must be inserted into lateral ventricle, draining it into peritoneal cavity
Which cortices are surrounded by which sulci/fissures?
- primary somatoMOTOR and somatoSENSORY cortices are surrounded by the CENTRAL sulcus
- primary AUDITORY and GUSTATORY cortices are surrounded by LATERAL fissure
- primary VISUAL cortex surrounded by CALCARINE sulcus
What are the 4 lobes of the brain?
- frontal lobe
- parietal lobe
- occipital lobe
- temporal lobe
What does the frontal lobe control?
movement
reasoning
personality
decision making
What does the parietal lobe control?
sensory perception
What does the occipital lobe control?
vision/sight
What does the temporal lobe control?
hearing
memory
What does the cerebellum control?
coordination
balance
What does the brainstem control?
breathing
blood pressure
body temp
Which cells produce myelin?
CNS - oligodendrocytes
PNS - Schwann cells
What are the two tracts of the efferent pathway? (motor and descending)
- pyramidal tracts
- extrapyramidal tracts
What are the tracts of the pyramidal tracts?
- lateral corticospinal tract
- anterior corticalspinal tract
What are the tracts of the extrapyramidal tracts?
- rubrospinal tract
- reticulospinal tract
- olivospinal tract
- vestibulospinal tract
What are the tracts of the afferent pathway? (sensory and ascending)
- dorsal column medial lemniscus system
- spinocerebellar tracts
- anterolateral system
- spinoolivary fibres
What are 2 the tracts of the dorsal column medial lemniscus system?
- gracile fasciculus
- cuneate fasciculus
What are the two tracts of the spinocerebellar tracts?
- posterior spinocerebellar tract
- anterior spinocerebellar tract
What 2 tracts are part of the anterolateral system?
- lateral spinothalamic tract
- anterior spinothalamic tract
What are the three sheath layers which surround an axon?
- endoneurium (innermost, nerve fibre)
- perineurium (cluster of neurons)
- epineurium (external connective tissue sheath)
