Nervous System Flashcards
What are the three parts of the diencephalon?
- hypothalamus
- thalamus
- pineal gland (part of the epithalamus)
What are the three parts of the brain stem?
- midbrain
- pons
- medulla oblongata
what are the major parts of the CNS?
- cerebrum
- diencephalon
- brain stem
- cerebellum
- central canal
- spinal cord
- pituitary gland
What are the 3 dural folds?
- falx cerebri (in the longitudinal fissure)
- tentorium cerebelli (between the occipital and temporal lobes)
- falx cerebelli
What are the three meningeal layers?
- dura mater
- arachnoid mater
— subarachnoid space filled with CSF - pia mater
Where is CSF produced?
- choroid plexus of ventricles of the brain
- surrounds whole of CNS (brain and spinal cord)
What happens when CSF doesn’t return to circulation?
- condition called hydrocephalus
- catheter must be inserted into lateral ventricle, draining it into peritoneal cavity
Which cortices are surrounded by which sulci/fissures?
- primary somatoMOTOR and somatoSENSORY cortices are surrounded by the CENTRAL sulcus
- primary AUDITORY and GUSTATORY cortices are surrounded by LATERAL fissure
- primary VISUAL cortex surrounded by CALCARINE sulcus
What are the 4 lobes of the brain?
- frontal lobe
- parietal lobe
- occipital lobe
- temporal lobe
What does the frontal lobe control?
movement
reasoning
personality
decision making
What does the parietal lobe control?
sensory perception
What does the occipital lobe control?
vision/sight
What does the temporal lobe control?
hearing
memory
What does the cerebellum control?
coordination
balance
What does the brainstem control?
breathing
blood pressure
body temp
