Nervous system Flashcards
Sensory (afferent neurons)
senses stimuli from both within the body and from the external environment
integrative
store and process of sensory information to make the effector organs to exhibit the best response
motor or effectors
responds to stimuli by some type of action/ movement of the body
visceral
sensory nerves on the organs
somatic
sensory nerves from the skin, skeletal muscles, or joints
Motor or efferent nerves
transmit nerve impulses away from CNS (brain) towards organs, muscles, and glands, they bring a response
parasympathetic
maintains or decreases operations to maintain homeostasis, ex: happens when you sleep (rest and digestion response)
sympathetic
fight or flight, increases operations to protect itself from danger
Affect
discussing emotional response or how someone feels
effect
discussing physical response or tangible response
central nervous system (CNS) location
Location: brain and spinal cord
CNS function
carries info through a bundle of axons called a tract. Controls all body functions
Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
carries info through a bundle of axons called a nerve, nervous system outside of brain and spinal cord
PNS cranial nerves
12 pairs, transmit impulses to and from the brain and extending to the head and neck
PNS spinal nerves
31 pairs, carry impulses to and from the spinal cord supplying impulses to the body below the head
