nervous system Flashcards
what is an effector
a muscle/gland (MAKE SURE TO NAME IT IN QN)
Central nervous system consists of?
brain, spinal cord
peripheral nervous system consists of?
Cranial nerves
Spinal nerves
Sense organs
function of nervous system
- control voluntary actions
- control involuntary actions
- allows for coordination of body parts quickly
pathway of nerve impulses
stimulus -> recpetor/sensory nuerone -> CNS -> synpase -> relay neruone -> synpase -> motor neurone -> effector
sensory neurone
trnasmits nerve impulses from sense organs/receptors to CNS
relay neurone
transmits nerve impulses from sensory neurone to the motor neurone
motor neurone
transmits nerve impulses from CNS to effectors
direction nerve impulses travel in the neurones?
Dendrites -> dendrons -> cell body -> axon
what is a synapse
Junction between two neurones/between a neurone and an effector
rooting reflex
Pressure exerted onto baby face stimulates the skin receptors
Nerve impulses are generated
Nerve impulses are transmitted along sensory neurone to brain
In brain, nerve impulses are transmitted first across a synapse to relay neurone and across anther synapse to the motor neurone
Motor neurone trnamsits nerve impulses from brain to neck muscle
The neck muscles contract and baby turns his face towards the touch
sensation pathway
Receptor in skin -> sensory neurone -> relay neurone in spinal cord -> forebrain
voluntary action
Forebrain -> relay neurone in spinal cord -> motor neurone -> effector
Voluntar actions vs Involuntary action
Voluntar actions vs Involuntary action
Controlled by will, Not controlled by will
Receptor is unnecessary as nerve impulses can be initiated in brain, Receptor is necessary to generate nerve impulses
Nerve impulses initiated by brain, Nerve impulses not initiated by brain
May or may not involve sensory neurone, Always involve the sensory neurone
Not the same response to the same stimulus, Always the same response to the same stimulus
