Nervous System Flashcards
What does the nervous system GENERALLY do?
Along w/ the endocrine system, helps keep controlled conditions w/ limits that maintain health and homeostasis.
What is the nervous system responsible for?
Behaviors, memories and movements
The study of normal function and disorders
Neurology
What is the CNS and what part of the body is it?
Central nervous system, brain and spinal cord
What is the PNS and what parts of the body does it accompany?
Peripheral nervous system, cranial nerves and spinal nerves w/ sensory and motor receptors, ganglia and sensory receptors
What are the 3 nervous systems the PNS is divided into?
Somatic, autonomic and enteric
Causes fight or flight response
Sympathetic
Causes rest and digest
Parasympathetic
Word for sensory
Afferent
Word for motor
Efferent
Definition of sensory
Different receptors like somatic, interceptors and sensory neurons
Definition of motor
Nerve impulses from CNS to muscles and glands
Definitions of somatic, autonomic and enteric
Voluntary
Involuntary
Brain of digestive organs
Another name for cell body
Soma
What is in the soma?
Nucleus and most organelles
Part of the neuron that sends electrical signals
The axon
What is gray matter made up of?
Nerve cell bodies, dendrites, axon terminals and neuroglia
Where is gray matter found?
In the spinal cord and covers the cerebral hemispheres of the brain
Order and how of the nervous system function
Sensory receptor -> sensory (afferent) neuron sends info to the ->integration (control) center [brain or spinal cord] -> motor (efferent) neuron takes the info part of the body to the effector.
What two divisions is the PNS separated into?
Somatic and autonomic
What kind of muscle does somatic nervous systems serve?
Only skeletal muscle
What does the autonomic nervous system innervate?
Smooth, cardiac and glands
What are the two antagonistic autonomic NS?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Sympathetic NS is active when…?
High energy, emergency, exercise
Parasympathetic is active when…?
Calm, sitting, after eating, urination, pooping, digestion
What is this and what are the markings from top to bottom
Motor neuron
Dendrite
Neuroglial cell
Soma
Axon
