Integumentary System Flashcards
What is included in the integumentary system?
Skin, hair, nails, sabaceous glands, sudoriferous glands, and sensory receptors
What is the function of the integumentary system?
Protection, thermoregulation, vitamin D, detecting sensations
What are the 4 principal cell types of the epidermis
Keratinocytes
Melanocytes
Merkel cells
Langerhans cells
Layers of the epidermis (before sex…)
Stratums: top to bottom
Corneum
Lucidum
Granulosum
Spinosum
Basale
Layers of the dermis
Top to bottom
Papillary
Reticular
Hypodermis (subcutaneous region)
Glands:
Sebaceous
Sudoriferous
Ceruminous
Mammary
Hair
Arrector pili (smooth muscle)
What tissue is epithelial tissue made?
Keratinized stratified squamous
How many layers does thin skin have?
4 stratum layers
How many layers does thick skin have?
5 layers
What do Keratinocytes do?
Produce:
Keratin
Lamellar granules
Lam grans produce water repellent sealant to keep water in or out and doesn’t let foreign material in
What do melanocytes do?
Produce pigment cells
Melanin (yellow red or brown black)
Color of skin and UV protection
What do langerhans cells do and where do they come from?
Comes from red blood marrow and migrates to the epidermis.
Defense against microbes that invade the skin
What do Merkle cells do?
They make contact with the sensory neuron and work together to detect touch sensations
What is the basale layer consist of
Stem cells to continuously produce keratinocytes
What type of cells is the basale layer made up from?
Single row of cuboidal or columnar
