Nervous System Flashcards
what does the nervous system comprise of?
brain
spinal cord
structure and function of a sensory neurone?
cell body in the middle and connected to receptor and has myelin sheath
function: connects receptors which detect stimuli in the environment
structure and function of relay neurones?
contains dendrites
found within the CNS and connects motor and sensory neurones
structure and function of a motor neurone?
dendrites branch from cell body has myelin sheath
is connected to an effector
connects CNS to effectors to produce responses
what is a synapse?
small gap between two neurones and allows neurones to transmit electrical implies to each other
how do impulses cross the synapse?
electrical impulse travel to end of axon
the impulse causes neurotransmitters to be released and it diffuses from axon across synapse to other neurone
electrical impulse regenerated and travels down other axon
what is a reflex arc?
stimulus>receptor>sensory neurone>relay neruone in spinal cord>motor neurone>effector
quick reflex action
