DNA Flashcards
properties of DNA?
large polymer - 2 polynucleotides in a double helix
nucleotide has ribose phosphate and a nitrogenous base
a-t and c-g bonds by hydrogen bonding
what is a genome?
is the entire genetic material of an organism
where is DNA stored?
in the nucleus as long threaded structure called chromosomes
what is a gene?
section of a chromosome that codes for a specific protein
how is the genetic code read?
as triplets - each triplet codes for a single amino acid
what is a mutation?
change in then DNA sequence
do mutations in the triplet code have an effect on phenotype and why?
no effect on phenotype because
then mutation in the triplet code can still code for the same amino acid
silent mutations might occur which might not affect DNA sequence
