NERVOUS & MUSCULAR SYSTEM Flashcards
Explain the passage of an ELECTROCHEMICAL NERVE and then explain what goes wrong in MS including the symptoms that then occur?
Neurone send messages ELECTROCHEMICALLY - this means that chemicals cause an ELECTRICAL IMPULSE.
Chemicals in the body are ELECTRICALLY CHARGED when they have an eclair so charge, they are called ions.
AFFERENT NEURONES
These are specialised to send impulses TOWARDS the CNS away from the PERIPHERAL SYSTEM
EFFERENT NEURONES
They carry signals from the CNS to the cells in the peripheral system
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition which can affect the brain and/or spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance
ALZHEIMERS DISEASE
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), also referred to simply as Alzheimer’s, is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and worsens over time. It is the cause of 60–70% of cases of dementia. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events (short-term memory loss).
PARKINSONS DISEASE
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor system. The symptoms generally come on slowly over time. Early in the disease, the most obvious are shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking.
