Nervous and Endocrine System Flashcards
1
Q
Neurons: Three Basic Parts
A
- Cell Body = contains all necessary cell components including nucleus
- Axon = carries nerve impulse or AP along length of the cell. Some covered in myelin (insulating = speed). Terminal contains synapses (junction)
- Dendrites = small, branch-like, make connections to other cells, “talking” to other cells
2
Q
Central Nervous System (CNS)
A
Brain and spinal cord.
3
Q
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
A
Controls skeletal muscle - things we voluntarily control.
4
Q
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
A
Control our involuntary activities via glands and organs. Divided into three parts.
5
Q
ANS: Sympathetic, Parasympathetic, and ENS
A
S: fight or flight - controls short-lived behaviour e.g. increased HR, respiration rate, etc.
P: rest and restore - maintains stable body functioning in normal conditions.
ENS: meshwork of nerve fibres that innervate the viscera (GI tract, pancreas, gall bladder).
