Q
Peristalsis
A
The smooth muscle in the walls of the GI tract contracts in a wavelike movement to propel the bolus (food) along to tract.
4
Q
Saliva Contains…
A
- Mucus binds and moistens the crushed food
- Amylase begin the digestion of the carbs
- LgA in saliva binds to microbes in mouth
- Lysozyme destroys bacteria
5
Q
Voluntary:
A
- Cheeks and tongue push back bolus towards pharynx and then towards larynx
- Epiglottis stops food from entering airways by closing when bolus is swallowed
6
Q
Involuntary
A
- The pharyngeal muscle propels the bolus into the oesophagus
- Peristalsis to oesophageal sphincter where it opens once food touches it
7
Q
What is in Gastric Juice?
A
- HCl – anti-bacterial effect and denatures proteins
- Mucus – alkaline, protects stomach wall from acid damage
- Pepsinogen – converts to pepsin (protease) when activated by acid, digests proteins
- Gastric lipase – digests lipids
- Intrinsic factor – allows vitamin B12 to be absorbed
8
Q
Chyme
A
Fluid that leaves stomach through pyloric sphincter.
