Nervous and Circulatory System Review Flashcards
How do we sense touch?
Sensory Receptors
Where are touch receptors located on skin?
Epidermis/Dermis layer
What is the role of the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
Sensory motor neurons - communicate with CNS.
What is the role of the Central Nervous System (CNS)?
Interneurons of brain/spinal chord
How do the CNS and the PNS communicate?
PNS picks up on signals out of the CNS’s reach- communicate signals back and forth to trigger motor responses .
Which part of our brain is responsible for learning, memory, language, and voluntary movement?
Cerebrum
What does the hypothalamus do?
Regulates body temperature, thirst, appetite, and balance
In the eyes, what are the roles of rods and cones cells?
Rods - light
Cones - color
Where does deoxygenated blood enter the heart? Where does oxygenated blood enter the heart?
DO - right atrium
O - left atrium
What is the role of the circulatory system?
Pumps blood throughout the body
What would happen if the heart suddenly stopped beating?
Blood would fail to move throughout the body and the organs would die
What factors impact blood pressure?
How thick veins are/how dense blood is.
What is high blood pressure?
High pressure of blood against walls of the vein
Ho can you reduce your blood pressure?
Cardio workouts - pumps blood throughout body and thickens veins, breaks up particles w/in blood
Artery
Large blood vessel - carries blood away from heart
Veins
Large blood vessels - carry blood to heart
White Blood Cells
Body’s disease fighters
Red Blood Cells
Carry oxygen to body’s cells
Plasma
Clear fluid portion of blood
Platelet
Cell fragment that forms blood clots
Capillaries
Microscopic blood vessels
Neuron
Sensory/receptor cells
Pacemaker
Device that sends signals for the heart to contract
Valve
Flap of tissue that prevents blood from blowing backwards
