Multiple Sclerosis
an autoimmune disease in which auto-reactive T cells cross the blood-brain barrier and attack the myelin sheath leading to a cascade of inflammation.
Two most common types: primary progressive & relapsing-remitting
MS causes
autoimmune factors, virus triggers, possible genetic predisposition, various forms of physical trauma
MS Symptoms
Weakness, numbness, loss of balance, loss of coordination, bowel and bladder dysfunction, muscle spasticity, optic nerve neuritis
MS Therapies
immunomodulator drugs immunosuppressants weakness therapies spasticity therapies tremor therapies visual problem therapies
Parkinson’s
loss of production of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the basal ganglia -> balance disruption between dopamine & ACH -> dec voluntary movement control
Parkinson’s Causes
free radical damage, toxins, age related drop in dopamine producing neurons, genetics, repeated head trauma, illegal drug use, hydrocephalus, viral encephalitis
Parkinson’s Symptoms
resting tremor, “pill rolling” motion, bradykinesia, rigidity, postural instability, difficulty rising from sitting, shuffling gait
Parkinson’s Treatments
Levodopa dopamine agonists DBS surgery Monoamine Oxidase B inhibitors Embryonic Tissue transplantation
