Nerve Tissue Flashcards
Where is nervous tissue found ?
Found all over the body in the nervous system
What are neurons?
Nerve cells
What is the structure of a motor neuron?(6)
- Cell body with threads spreading out
- Axons
- Dendrites
- Schwann cells
- Myelin sheath
- Synapse
What are axons?
Axons transmit nerve impulses away from the cell body.
What are dendrites?
Transmit nerve impulses towards the cell body.
How is myelin sheath formed and what is it?
The axon is enclosed by Schwann cells which produce a myelin sheath. The sheath which protects the nerves from other electrical impulses . (Like an insulator around an electric wire)
What is a synapse?
The site where a nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to the next is called a synapse.
How impulses transmitted from neuron to neuron?
By means of neurotransmitters
What is a neurotransmitter?
This is a chemical substance produced in the axon and stored in synaptic vesicles and diffuse towards the dendrite of the next neuron.
Neurons are in contact by contact called ______.
Synapses form between branched ends of an _____ and a _______.
One neuron can transfer ______ to more than one other neuron.
Synapses are not ____ contacts, but a microscopically small synaptic gap occurs between the axon and dendrite
Synapses Axon Dendrite Impulses Direct
What is a synapse?
A synapse is a structure that permits a neuron to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron.
What are types of neurons?(3)
- interneuron
- motor neuron
- sensory neuron
