Bone Flashcards
What is bone made up of?
- Calcium and phosphate which makes bone hard
- Collagen
What is collagen?
Protein that makes the bones slightly flexible
What is the bone matrix?
The intercellular substance of bone tissue consisting of collagen fibers, ground substance and in organic bone salts.
What is the structure of the matrix?(2)
- large quantities of calcium and phosphate. This gives the matrix a hard, calciferous and opaque appearance.
- collagen in the matrix ensures the bone is not brittle
What is spongy bone?
Light bone
Where is spongy bone found?
Ends of long bone and inside of bony structures.
What is the structure of spongy bone?
Composed of cells called osteocytes that sit in small cavities known as lacunae.
What is compact bone?
Compact and dense bone
Where is compact bone found?
Surface of bony structures.
What is bone marrow?
Fatty deposits, blood vessels and other tissues in spongy bone.
What is red bone marrow?
Where red and white blood cells are produced.
Example of where red bone marrow is found?
Ribs, sternum, skull, hip bones and long bones.
Where is yellow bone marrow found?
Shafts of long bones
What is the function of yellow bone marrow?
Stores fat
