Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Where is epithelial tissue located?
Covers the surface of the body (skin) and lines the ducts, and inner spaces of the body or body organs.
What is internal epithelium called?
Endothelium
What is the structure of squamous epithelium?
Thin, large, flat cells that are irregularly shaped.
Where is squamous epithelium located?(4)
- inner layer mouth
- oesophagus
- alveoli of the lungs
- lines heart chambers and blood vessels
What is function of squamous epithelium tissue?
Being thin and having a large surface area, allows for nutrients and gases to diffuse through them easily.
Structure of endothelium:
Smooth,tightly interlocking cells
Function of the endothelium:
Reduce friction in blood vessels
Where is the endothelium located?
Lines inner spaces of organs eg. Walls of blood vessels
What is the structure of cuboidal epithelium tissue?
- Tightly packed cube shaped cells.
- Large round centrally located nuclei.
What is the function of cuboidal epithelium tissue?
Absorption and secretion of substances.
Where is cuboidal epithelium tissue located?
Lining of glands eg. Salivary glands, kidney tubes and liver
What is the structure of columnar epithelium tissue?
Elongated, column shaped cells
What is the function of columnar epithelium tissue?(3)
- Secretes mucus
- Absorb digested food
- Protect and support the underlying tissue
Where is columnar epithelium found?
Digestive tract
What is structure of ciliated columnar epithelium tissue?
Has fine hair like outgrowths called cilia on their free surfaces.
What is a function of ciliated columnar epithelium?(3)
- Cilia beat to move mucus along the air passage ways
- Cilia can also ova in the oviducts
- It helps move cerebrospinal fluid along the central canal of the spinal cord
Where is the ciliated columnar epithelium located?
Air passages such as the nose, uterus and oviducts.
