Cartilage Flashcards
What is cartilage?
Strong flexible connective tissue that is found in various parts of the body.
What is the structure of cartilage?(2)
- Made up of inelastic collagen fibers and elastic fibers
- There are no nerves or blood vessels in the matrix
Where is hyaline cartilage found and what does it do?
End of bones where it prevents friction in joints
Where is hyaline cartilage found?
Tips of nose and larynx and between the ribs and sternum.
Structure and location of fibrocartilage. (3)
Intervertebral discs, edges of sockets of ball and socket joints and between the pubic bones
What is fibrocartilage?
Tough very strong tissue found predominantly in the intervertebral disks .
What is the function of fibrocartilage?
- Enlarges the joint sockets at the shoulder and hip
- Protects tendons where they have to slide over bone
What is elastic cartilage?
Cartilage defined by the addition of elastin fibers to the extracellular matrix.
Where is elastic cartilage found?(3)
- External ear
- Epiglottis
- Eustachian tubes
