Nerve Review Deck Flashcards
Describe pathways of the Terminal Nerves of the Brachial Plexus:
- Median Nerve “middle of the M” (got contributions from lateral and medial cords) travels anterior to the Elbow Joint through the Cubital Fossa medial to the Biceps Tendon to innervate most of Anterior Forearm Muscles (6.5 out of 8) through the Carpal Tunnel to innervate some of the Intrinsic Hand Muscles
- Musculocutaneous Nerve “Lateral side of the M” innervates the Anterior Compartment of the Arm and travels to the forearm superficially to innervate Lateral Cutaneous Forearm
- Ulnar Nerve “Medial side of the M” that branches from the Medial Cord and travels behind Medial Epicondyle in a groove
- Radial Nerve “Posterior to the M” to innervate Posterior Arm and Ultimately Forearm
NOTE: Axillary Nerve is also important to the Upper Extremities but it is not a Terminal Nerve
Radial Nerve Pathway:
- The Radial Nerve originates posterior to the Brachial Plexus from Posterior Cord
- It passes through the Triangular Interval to the back of the Humerus where it travels down in the “Spiral Groove” between the Medial and Lateral Heads of the Triceps with the artery that supplies the posterior part of the upper limb called the Deep Brachial Artery (Profunda)
- It goes into Forearm under Brachioradialis (lateral) and innervates all of the Forearm Posterior Compartment
- Travels to Dorsum of the Hand and innervates Lateral 3.5 digits (not including the tips)
What does the Radial Nerve innervate?
- Triceps Brachii
2. All 7 Superficial Muscles of Forearm Posterior Compartment: A. Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus B. Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis C. Extensor Carpi Ulnaris D. Extensor Digitorum E. Digiti Minimi F. Anconeus G. Brachioradialis
3. All 5 Deep Muscles of the Forearm Posterior Compartment: A. Abductor Pollicis Longus B. Extensor Pollicis Longus C. Extensor Pollicis Brevis D. Extensor Indicis E. Supinator
- Cutaneous Innervation of the Dorsal Hand (Digits 1-3 and 1/2 of 4 (not including tips))
Musculocutaneous Nerve:
- Terminal Nerve branch off of Lateral Cord of the Brachial Plexus (Lateral line of the Brachial Plexus “M”)
- Provides Motor Innervation to All 3 Muscles of Anterior Arm Compartment:
A. Coracobrachialis
B. Brachialis
C. Biceps Brachii - Provides Cutaneous Innervation of Lateral Forearm
Median Nerve overview:
- Middle of the Brachial Plexus “M” that gets contributions from lateral and medial cords
- Provides MOST of the Motor innervation in the Anterior Forearm Muscles
- Provides SOME of the Motor Innervation in Lateral Hand
- Provides SOME Cutaneous Innervation of the Lateral Hand
Median Nerve Pathway:
- Travels from Middle of the Brachial Plexus “M” (gets contributions from lateral and medial cords) anterior to the Elbow Joint through the Cubital Fossa medially to the Biceps Tendon
- Travels down Anterior Forearm
- Travels through Carpal Tunnel to the Hand
- Travels on Lateral Side of Hand
What does the Median Nerve innervate?
- 3 out 4 of Superficial Muscles of the Forearm Anterior Compartment:
A. Flexor Carpi Radialis
B. Palmaris Longus
C. Pronator Teres - The Intermediate Muscle of the Forearm Anterior Compartment:
A. Flexor Digitorum Superficialis - 2.5 of the 3 Deep Muscles of the Forearm Anterior Compartment:
A. 1/2 Flexor Digitorum Profundus
B. Flexor Pollicis Longus
C. Pronator Quadratus - Innervates Lateral 2 Lumbricals
- Innervates Thenar Group:
A. Opponens Pollicis
B. Flexor Pollicis Brevis
C. Abductor Pollicis Brevis - Hand Cutaneous Innervation of 3.5 Digits (1-3 and 1/2 of 4) on the Palm and Tips of the Dorsum
Ulnar Nerve Overview:
- Branch of the Medial Cord that becomes the most Medial nerve on the Brachial Plexus “M”
- The nerve that is stimulated when you hit your “funny bone”
- Travels behind the Medial Epicondyle of the Humerus
- Innervates 1.5 Muscles of Forearm Anterior Compartment
- Innervates most of the Intrinsic Muscles of the Hand
- Provides Hand with Cutaneous Innervation to the Pinky and 1/2 Ring Finger (Palm and Dorsum)
What does the Ulnar Nerve innervate?
- 1 Superficial Muscle of the Forearm Anterior Compartment:
A. Flexor Carpi Ulnaris - 1/2 of a Deep Muscles of the Forearm Anterior Compartment:
A. 1/2 Flexor Digitorum Profundus - Most of the Intrinsic Muscles of the Hand:
A. Palmaris Brevis
B. Adductor Pollicis
C. Dorsal Interossei
D. Palmar Interossei
E. Medial 2 Lumbricals
F. Hypothenar Group (Opponens Digiti Minimi, Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis, aBductor Digiti Minimi) - Cutaneous Innervation of the Palm and Dorsum for the Pinky and 1/2 Ring Finger
Axillary Nerve Overview:
- Branches from the Posterior Cord of the Brachial Plexus (BUT IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A TERMINAL NERVE)
- Innervates the Deltoid and Teres Minor
- Passes through the Quadrangular Space
What nerve innervates the muscles of the Anterior (Flexor) Compartment of the Arm?
Musculotaneous Nerve (Part of the Brachial Plexus)
NOTE: Also does Lateral Cutaneous Forearm innervation
What is the only nerve to travel through the Cubital Fossa?
Median Nerve
What Nerves innervate the Superficial Muscles of the Forearm Anterior Compartment?
- Median Nerve (3)
- Ulnar Nerve (1)
MEDIAN DOES MORE
What is the only Superficial Muscle of the Forearm Anterior Compartment that is NOT innervated by the Median Nerve?
Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
Innervated by Ulnar Nerve, It’s even in the name
What nerves innervate the Deep Muscles of the Forearm Anterior Compartment?
- Median Nerve (2.5)
- Ulnar Nerve (0.5)
AGAIN MEDIAN DOES THE MOST
