Clinical features of nephrotic syndrome
Proteinuria, oedema, hypoalbuminaemia, hyperlipidaemia
What classes are proteinuria
> 3-3.5g/day
Causes of nephrotic syndrome
Systemic disease, minimal change disease, membranous nephropathy, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranoproliferative / mesangiocapillary disease, glomerulonephritis
Investigations into nephrotic syndrome
Urine dipstick, which shows proteinuria, raised albumin:creatinine, renal biopsy in adults
Treatment of nephrotic syndrome
High dose steroids - prednisolone
Clinical features of nephritic syndrome
Haematuria, mild proteinuria, hypertension, oliguria and red cell casts
Causes of nephritic syndrome
SLE, anti-GBM disease, glomerulonephritis, post-strep GN, alports syndrome, IgA nephropathy, membranoproliferative GN
Systemic disease which can cause nephrotic syndrome
DM, SLE, amyloidosis
