Used to evaluate physical condition of newborn at birth and summarizes the newborn’s progress towards independent function in relation to heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, cry and irritability
Apgar score
8-10 apgar score indicates?
Good condition
7 or below apgar score indicates?
Needs resuscitative measures
3 or less apgar score indicates?
Significant distress
Signs of fetal respiratory distress?
Tachypnea 1hr after birth Retractions 1hr after birth Flaring nostrils 1hr after birth Central cyanosis Grunting 1 hour after birth
Pallor color indicates?
Anemia
Ruddy color indicates?
Polycythemia which is risk for jaundice
Regular heart rate?
120-160bpm
This is heart normally for up to 24 hours..
Murmurs
Blood pressure on newborn?
68/44 - 76/48
Begins with a nipple or any object placed in the neonate’s mouth/ touches the lip
Sucking
A reflex when a neonate is lifted above crib and suddenly lowered, arms and legs symmetrically extend and then abduct while fingers spread to form “c” and may cry for 6 months
Moro’s reflex
When neonate’s cheek is stroked, he turns his head in the direction of the stroke
Rooting
When a finger is placed at the the base of the toes, the neonate’s plantar flexion will be elicited
Planter grasping
When neonate is held upright with the feet touching a flat surface, he responds with dancing
Stepping
