Needle Thoracostomy - Indications (3)

A
  1. Single tension pneuomothorax with respiratory, cardiac and/or haemodynamic comrpomise - decompress the injured side only.
  2. Chest injuries in with major trauma where patient is peri-arrest - immediately decompress bilaterally
  3. Traumatic cardiac arrest with actual or suspected chest injuries - immediately decompress both sides (most injured side first)

DO NOT remove the catheter once decompression is performed

A
  1. Damage to underlying structures (eg. heart or lungs) especially in with patents <50kg
  2. Redevelopment of tension pneumothorax
