neck pain Flashcards
differential for neck pain
see pg 448
degenerative changes within cartilage of the facet joints cause
pain, but these changes are usu asymptomatic until trauma happens
cervical spondylosis
degen changes including disk space narrowing, osteophytes in disc margins, and arthritic changes in facet joints
inflamed, edematous muscles will frequently undergo
contraction/spasm that results in decreased blood flow and ischemia
3 tests to help diagnose cervical disc herniation
spurling test (have pt side bend to side of radicular pain and extend his or her head)
axial manual traction test (pulls up on head to decrease pressure on cervical root)
arm abduction test (elevate the affected arm over the head in abduction while pt is seated)
when are lab findings needed for neck pain?
when PE suggests systemic disease, inflammatory arthritis, or bone damage
