What is the most common cause of neck lumps?
reactive lymphadenopathy
a <3w lump suggest what
lymphadenopathy from self-limiting infection
What are differentials of midline lumps? what specific features will help u differentiate between them?
dermoid cyst <20yrs
thyroglossal cyst - below hyoid, moves on tongue protrusion
Chondoma - >20yr + bony hard
Thyroid mass - >20yr
wHat are differentials are submandibular triangle lumps? what specific features will help u differentiate between them?
Self-limiting lymphadenopathy - <20yrs
Malignant lymphadenopathy - firm and non-tender in >20
Consider submandibular salivary stone, tumour or sialadenitis if not a node
What are differentials are anterior triangle lumps? what specific features will help u differentiate between them?
LN - self limiting or malignant Branchial cysts Cystic hygromas - transilluminate brightly Parotid tumour Laryngocele
wHat are differentials are posterior triangle lumps? what specific features will help u differentiate between them?

thyroglossal cysts move upwards on protrusion of the tongue
What are cystic hygromas?
congenital lymphatic lesion found classically on left side of neck
most evident at birth
transilluminates brightly
What are branchial cysts? where are they found?
Oval, mobile mass develops between sternocleidomastoid muscle and the pharynx
how does a carotid aneurysm present?
pulsatile lateral neck mass that doesn’t move on swallowing
What possible tests would u consider for neck lumps?
US CT Virology Mantoux test CXR - malignancy or bilateral hilariously lymphadenopathy Fine needle aspiration
