(check when hyperextended and on usual position) bilateral symmetry of sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles; trachea is midline.

(use thumbs to check placement) midline
Thyroid gland
(chin slightly down, palpate tissue towards sternocleidomastoid on right and left) tissue firm and pliable. (From the back, while swallowing palpate in circular motion towards sternocleidomastoid). (With head hyperextended examine from side view) No inflammation.
Carotid artery
bounding wave detected
Auscultate carotid and temporal arteries with bell
no bruits
Neck range of motion
(extension, hyperextension, lateral and rotation) appropriate range of motion
Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscle strength and spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
shrug and turn head with resistance. Symmetric strength
Nodes
(palpate occipital, postauricular, preauricular, retropharyngeal, submandibular, submental, anterior and posterior cervical, supraclavicular) nodes not palpable. (Remember to ask patient to take deep breath when palpating supraclavicular)
