NCCR Chapter 1
Define: ROUGH-IN
The first step of wiring a home.
Panelboard, wiring, and device boxes are installed.
Nothing is powered yet.
Define: TRIM-OUT
The second step of wiring a home.
Receptacles, switches, devices and fixtures are installed and connected to the panelboard.
This is after the walls are closed in.
Define: TESTING
The third step of wiring a home.
All devices, switches, and receptacles are checked for power and correct operation.
Define: TROUBLESHOOTING
The fourth and final step of wiring a home.
All problems found in the testing step are fixed.
Define: RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICIAN
An electrician who installs new systems in places people call home.
Responsibilities:
- Read electrical plans and wiring diagrams
- Install panelboard and protective devices such as circuit breakers
- Install wiring and devices such as receptacles and switches
- Install lighting, smoke detectors, and other fixtures
Define: COMMERCIAL ELECTRICIAN
An electrician who installs new systems in commercial buildings such as offices or stores.
Responsibilities:
- Read electrical plans and wiring diagrams
- Install panelboard and protective devices such as circuit breakers
- Install wiring and devices such as receptacles and switches
- Install lighting, smoke detectors, and other fixtures
Define: SERVICE ELECTRICIAN
An electrician who fixes or upgrades existing systems.
Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical issues in residential or commercial buildings
- Service upgrades to increase capacity
Define: ELECTRICAL REMODELING CONTRACTOR
An electrician who updates, rearranges or installs new devices to existing systems.
Responsibilities:
- Move outlets or add switches
- Replace entire electrical systems
- Add wiring tor new devices
- Install smart home appliances
Define: INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN
An electrician who works on system in an industrial setting.
Responsibilities:
- Working with three-phase power, motors, and motor control systems
- Installing conduit and wiring for motors and process control instruments
- Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing motors and other electrical equipment
Define: ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
An electrician who maintains a building or buildings.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor and maintain electrical systems and equipment
- Take apart and repair magnetic motor starters
Define: UTILITY SUBSTATION ELECTRICIAN
An electrician who works for a municipal power provider at the distribution level.
Responsibilities:
- Install and maintain equipment for power delivery, such as circuit breakers, transformers, and voltage regulators
- Install grounding systems, conductors, and raceways
Define: MARITIME ELECTRICIAN
An electrician who works on ships or boats.
Responsibilities:
- Install batteries and generators
- Maintain and report motors, pumps, and navigation systems
