Delmar's Unit 2 Flashcards
What is Coulomb’s law
The force of electrostatic attraction or repulsion is directly proportional to the product of the two charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
What is a coulomb?
The charge transferred by a current of 1 ampere in one second.
What is the electron flow theory?
Current flows from the most negative point in the circuit to the most positive.
What is the conventional current flow theory?
Current flows from the most positive point in the circuit to the most positive.
What is a complete circuit?
A circuit where the path forms a full loop
What is a short circuit?
A circuit that allows a current to travel an unintended path with little or no resistance
What is a grounded circuit?
A circuit that allows a current to travel a path to ground which is not intended.
What is an open circuit?
A circuit that does not complete a loop and thus does not allow a current to travel.
What is a volt?
The amount of potential necessary to cause 1 coulomb to produce 1 joule of work.
What does EMF stand for?
electromotive force
What are other terms for volt?
potential difference or EMF
What is an ohm?
The amount of resistance that allows 1 ampere of current to flow when the applied voltage is 1 volt.
What is volt a measurement of?
Electromotive force
What is an ohm a measure of?
resistance
What is a watt a measurement of?
Power
How many watts in a horse power?
746
What does BTU stand for?
British thermal unit
What is a BTU?
The heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit.
What is ohm’s law?
It takes 1 volt to push 1 ampere through 1 ohm.
How much resistance does an open circuit have?
Infinite
Engineering notation uses steps of _____?
1000
What is an ampere?
1 coulomb per second
What is an ampere a measurement of?
The amount of electricity that is flowing through a circuit.
