Delmar's Unit 4 Flashcards
Magnetism
What are natural magnets called?
lodestones
Where is magnetic north located?
Near the south pole
What is a permanent magnet?
Magnets that do not require any power or force to maintain their field
What happens when a permanent magnet is cut into pieces?
Each piece becomes its own magnet
Define ferromagnetic
Metals that are easily magnetized
Define paramagnetic
Metals that can be magnetized.
Define Diamagnetic
Metals or nonmetals that cannot be magnetized
What are some examples of ferromagnetic materials
Iron, nickel, cobalt, and manganese.
What are some examples of paramagnetic materials?
Platinum, titanium, and chromium.
What are some examples of diamagnetic materials?
Copper, brass, and antimony.
What is flux?
Magnetic lines of force
What is an electromagnet?
When an electric current flows through a conductor, a magnetic field is formed around the conductor.
How do you determine the strength of an electromagnet?
Multiply number of turns of wire by the the current flow.
What is the measure of electromagnet strength
Ampere-turns
What is the term for the ability of a material to be magnetized?
Permeability
What is the term for a materials resistance to magnetism?
Reluctance
What is the left-hand rule?
When the fingers of the left hand are placed around the windings in the direction of electron current flow, the thumb points to the north magnetic pole.
What are the three systems used to measure magnetic values?
The English System
The CGS System
The SI System
