What were the Nazi’s aims on reducing unemployment?
Make Germany strong again!
- wanted an autarky
- aimed for rearmement
- created a huge programme of public works to create jobs
(Olympic stadium, 7000km of autobahns)

- improved leisure time of German workers
- discounts/free tickets to theatres/concerts, museums, cruises
- encouraged improved conditions and wages
(however many work places got worse, there were serious accidents in factories and workers couldn’t question these conditions)

What happened to trade unions in 1933?
BANNED
- to control the workforce and prevent strikes
RAD
National Labour Corps
From 1933, it was compulsory for men 18-25 to serve in RAD for 6 months
- in 1939 extended to women
Wore uniform and lived in camps with military training
When did RAD become compulsory?

Invisible unemployment
- part-time workers listed as full-time
- ignored unemployed jews and women
- unemployed men under 25 forced into RAD
Women
Conservative, modest clothing, aryan, long hair tied back, no interest in politics
SOLE PURPOSE: Have lots of children and become a housewife
3Ks = kitchen, children, church
Lebensborn
Unmarried women could donate a baby to Hitler
- have a baby with socially pure (aryan) SS man
Mother’s cross
Awards given to mothers with large families
Gold cross = 8 children
Law for Encouragement of Marriage
Aimed to increase the birthrate
- loans to help couples marry
- then could keep a 1/4 of it per child
- but woman must quit her job
Divorce Law
Divorce was allowed if the couple couldn’t have kids or they already had 4 kids
Hitler Youth
1936 attendance = compulsory!
- children taught that Nazi loyalty came above their parents
- encouraged to tell if friends/family criticised the Nazis
- extreme sports, military skills and fitness
- taught Nazi based skills
- domestic/motherhood preparation for girls
When did the Hitler Youth become compulsory?
1936 for age 10+
