Van der Lubbe found holding matches and claimed to have started the fire protesting against fascists
Hitler used this opportunity to turn people against communists (4000 of them arrested)
- he persuaded Hindenburg to declare a state of emergency (enforce Article 48)

Rohm = leader of SA, in charge of 3 million soldiers and wanted to become independent
- criticised Hitler’s policies = BIG THREAT
Rohm and other leaders were killed! (400 murdered)

For Hitler:
- oppositions = eradicated
- secured support of the army
- can now use fear to rule
