- Austrian Nazis encouraged a union with Germany
- Austrian chancellor opposed this but he was assassinated

Saarland Plebiscite
- democratic vote showed 90% of Saarland pop wanted to reunite with Germany
Rearmament and Conscription
- Hitler announced publicly Germany was building up their forces to 1.4 million men by 1939 (through RAD and compulsory conscription)
- justified this because France and SU were building up theirs

- Hitler marched 22000 troops and reoccupied the Rhineland

- german troops occupied it and gained lots of valuable resources

- 96% Austrians were German speaking
- Austrian chancellor bullied then replaced by a Nazi
- Hitler marched troops into Austria, held a referendum and now had full control
Nazi-Soviet Pact

Germany and USSR sign a non-aggression pact to keep peace
- Hitler now doesn’t have to fight a war on 2 fronts
