What are the indications?
nausea or vomiting
What are the conditions to ondansetron?
> =25kg
LOA unaltered
What are the conditions for gravol?
<65yrs old
>=25kg
LOA unaltered
What are the contraindications for ondansetron?
allergy
prolonged QT syndrome known to pt
apomoprhine use (parkinsons disease meds)
What are the contraindications to dimenhydrinate?
ax or sensitivity to gravol or other antihistamines
overdose on anitcholingerics, TCAs or antihistamines
co-admin of diphenhydramine (would cause over sedation)
What is the treatment for ondansetron?
> =25kg
PO
4mg
ONE dose
What is the treatment for gravol?
>=25kg - < 50kg
IV/IM
25mg
one dose
>=50kg
IV/IM
50mg
one dose
Prior to IV administration of dimenhydrinate what should we do?
DILUTE IT with normal saline!! ( 1:9)
What are reasons you would give ondansetron? (as per the companion doc)
NAUSEA/ VOMIT CAUSE OF:
- drug interactions (ex. chemotherapy, alcohol, cannabis, illicit drugs)
- head trauma
- taking diphenhydramine, TCAs or anticholinergics
- elderly patients!!!
What are reasons you would give gravol? (as per the companion doc)
NAUSEA/ VOMIT CAUSE OF:
- motion sickness or vertigo
- upset stomach from food ingestion
- best for people on SSRIs
- hyperemesis for pregnant pts
- avoid with head injuries as it can cause increased ICP!!
If a pt receives dimenhydrinate and there is NO relief how long do we have to wait till we can give ondestron if they are indicated?
30 mins !!!
Why can’t we co administer antihistamines (gravol and benadryl) ?
because it can lead to over sedation and increase the anticholingeric effects (blurred vision, dry mouth, confusion, dementia, hallucination, urinary retention
What is apomorphine used for?
Parkinson’s disease, so…. ask pt PAST MED HX!
