Nature of Science Flashcards
Theory
an explanation backed by results obtained from repeated tests/experiments
Model
making/using a copy of what you are studying (a diagram, a drawing, or a 3-d object)
Hypothesis
a statement that describes what a person expects to happen or a solution to a problem
Observation
using your senses to notice something in nature or in an experiment
Inference
a conclusion or opinion that is formed because of evidence observed
Independent Variable
the thing that I change in the experiment (what I am investigating)
Dependent Variable
the thing that changes due to the independent variable (what is being measured)
Constant
the parts of an experiment that remain the same (you do NOT change)
Control
a standard used to compare test results “situation normal”
Scientific Law
a well-tested description of the behavior of something in nature that predicts or describes what will happen in a given situation but don’t explain why
Qualitative data
data that pertains to characteristics or properties
Quantitative data
data that is represented by a count or numbers
qualitative evidence
data with characteristics/properties. may include opinions like sweet or beautiful
quantitative evidence
data represented by count of numbers
bar graph
compares same type of data from separate entities
pie graph
compares percentages
line graph
compares change over time
direct relation
both x and y variables go up or down
indirect relation
one variable increases while the other decreases
