Enzymes Flashcards
activation energy
energy needed to start a chemical reaction
active site
deep pocket or grove on an enzyme that touches the substrate
enzyme
protein that speeds up chemical reactions
catalyst
inorganic chemical substance that speeds up chemical reaction
substrate
substance acted upon by an enzyme
product
new substance that forms as result of a chemical reaction
reactant
substance that is changed in a chemical reaction
list of things that speed up chemical reactions
substrate concentration, enzyme concentration, and increased temperature to optimum range
list of things that slow down a chemical reaction
extreme pH (acids/bases), low temperatures, high ionic/salt concentrations
Denature
Changing protein shape due to extreme heat
Endergonic Reaction
chemical reaction where the products contain MORE energy than the reactants (Energy in/absorbed)
Exergonic Reaction
chemical reaction where the products contain LESS energy than the reactants (Energy exits/releases)
inhibitor
substances that block active site on protein. they decrease enzyme activity. Produced by the body, and can be given as medicine
