Gerald Fitzgerald was replaced by a rival, this was intended by Cromwell to ensure no Irish leader became too powerful but it was interpreted as a direct attack. Gerald denounced Tudor rule and was summoned to England where he died - his son Thomas Fitzgerald proclaimed a catholic crusade to avenge his father

No, he appealed for help from the Pope and Charles IV but was unsuccessful
