NATURE AND EPISTEMOLOGY Flashcards
What is epistemology?
Epistemology is the study and theory of knowledge
Comes from the Greek word “episte”- meaning knowledge, and the greek word “logos” meaning theory
What do epistemologists often argue?
Epistemologists often argue that we make incorrect conclusions based on sensory experiences
Why is it important to question the reliability of our knowledge?
It is important to question the reliability of our knowledge because knowledge provides the foundation for our metaphysical and ethical beliefs. These beliefs dictate our actions, so we must have a solid foundation of knowledge to create good beliefs that will help us do good.
Define rationalism
Rationalism states that our thought processes and reason help us to find answers
Define A priori
An arguement that does not rely on evidence from the senses. These arguements deal with concepts and reasoning
Define anti-foundationalists
Philosophers who argue that knowledge is independent from sense experience because they rely on reasoning
Define empiricism
Empiricists argue that all knowledge comes from sensory perceptions, experience, and experimentation
Define A posteriori
An argument based on our direct experience of the world
Define foundationalists
Philosophers who argue that all knowledge comes from direct experience from the senses. They argue that this direct knowledge involves individuals experiencing things as they really are
