Natural Selection Flashcards
Deoxyribonucleic Acid, a molecule that is present in all living cells and that contains the information that determines the traits that a living thing inherits and needs to live.
DNA
In a nucleic acid chain a subunits that consists of a sugar a phosphate and a nitrogenous base
Nucleotide
found that the amount of adenine always equals the amount of thymine the amount of cytosine equals the amount of guanine
Chargaff’s Rules
1950s discovered that DNA has a double-helix structure it looks like a twisted ladder
Watson and Crick
used x-ray diffraction to make images of DNAthat helped reveal the structure of DNA
Rosalind Franklin
A change in the nucleotide base sequence of a gene or DNAmolecule
Mutations
a characteristic that improves an individuals ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment
Adaptions
a group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring.
Species
the process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arrive
Evolution
the remains of physical evidence of an organisms preserved by geological processes
Fossils
a historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the earths crust.
Fossil Record
an english naturalist geologist and biologist best known for his contributions to the science of evolution
Charles Darwin
a genetically determined characteristic
Trait
the human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired characteristics
Selective Breeding
the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their enviroment survive and reproduce more successfully then less well adapted individuals do a theory to explain the mechanism of evolution
Natural Selection
