invertebrate animals Flashcards
an animal that has a backbone
vertebrates
an animal that does not have a backbone
invertebrates
an organism that eats other organisms or organic matter
consumer
a mass of nerve cells
ganglion
the digestive tract
gut
a body cavity that contains the internal organs
coelom
the 2 sides of its body mirror each other on each side of its body the ant has one eye one antenna and three legs
bilateral symmetry
its body is organized around the center like spokes on a wheel
radical symmetry
you can not draw a straight line to divide its body into two or more equal parts its body is not organized around a center
asymmetry
they are the simplest invertebrates they have no tissues guts or neurons adult sponges move only millimeters a day if they move at all
sponges
have complex tissues and a gut for digesting food they have simple network of nerve cells they move more quickly than sponges can if the body cells are separated they can come back together
cnidarians
they are divided into 3 major classes planarians and marine flatworms flukes and tapeworms
flatworms
have bodies that are long slim and round like spaghetti they have bilateral symmetry they have a simple nervous system
roundworms
they fit into 3 classes the gastropods includes slugs ans snails the bivales include clams and other shellfish that have 2 shells cephalopods includes squids and octopuses
mollusks
a circulatory system in which the circulatory fluid is not contained entirely within vessels
open circulatory system
a circulatory system in which the heart circulates blood through a network of blood vessels that form a closed loop
closed circulatory system
they have bilateral symmetry they have closed circulatory system they have complex nervous system with a brain a nerve chord connects the brain to a ganglion in each segment they live in salt water fresh water or on land
annelid worms
a hard external supporting structure
exoskeleton
an eye composed of many light detectors
compound eye
a feeler that is on the head of an invertebrate such as a crustacean or an insect that senses touch taste or smell
antenna
a phase in the life cycle of many animals during which a rapid change from the immature form of an organism to the adult form takes place
metamorphosis
an internal skeleton made of bone or cartilage
endoskeleton
a system of canals filled with watery fluid that circulates throughout the body of an echinoderm
water vascular system
