Natural Selection Flashcards
Three types of adaptation
Anatomical
Behavioural
Physiological
What does endemic mean?
Species only found in one specific location
How does genetic variation occur within a population?
Meiosis Crossing over of chromatids/chromosomes Random assortment of alleles Random fertilisation Random generic mutations
What has to occur to bring about adaptation in a population?
Introduction of a selection pressure:
Change of habitat
New competition/predator
Random genetic mutations which produce advantageous alleles which mean the animal is more likely to survive and pass on it’s alleles
What is the definition of a species?
Individuals that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
How are zoos used to preserve species?
Captive-breeding programmes to try and increase numbers
Preservation of genetic diversity
Re-introduce animals back into the wild
