Natural Selection Flashcards
What are the 3 main types of natural selection
Stabilising selection, directional selection, disruptive selection
What is stabilising natural selection
When a gene makes an animal better then the rest in their climate, but would fail if there was to be a change in climate (the cheetah can’t run fast if there’s trees)
What is directional natural selection
A trait that grants a small advantage or the rest and builds up over millions of years - the giraffe
What is disruptive natural selection
When a species split off and adapt to their environment in different ways (the turtle)
What type of natural selection is it when a trait makes an animal thrive in its environment but they cannot adapt as efficiently as others
Stabilising natural selection
What type of natural selection is it when a trait gives a small advantage but over millions of years gives a massive advantage
Directional natural selection
What type of natural selection is it when once species splits up and the animals go to different locations and adapt to their surroundings through traits
Disruptive natural selection
