Response Stage

A

Begins immediately after disaster incident occurs; includes shelter in place, evacuation, search & rescue, staging area (on-site incident command station), & disaster triage

Recovery Stage

A

Begins when the danger from the disaster has passed & all local, state, & federal agencies are present in the area to help victims rebuild their lives & community restore public services

A

Triage: identify & separate individuals quickly according to injury severity & treatment needed; disaster triage focuses on sorting the greatest # of ppl as fast as possible; :do the greatest good, for the greatest #, in the shortest time”

START Triage System

A
  • “simple triage & rapid treatment”
  • Used in multicasualty or mass casualty incident
  • Triage of injured person should occur in less than 1 min based on resps, perfusion, & mental stat
  • Describes how to use ppl w/ minor injuries to help
  • Person is tagged w/ a colored triage tag
  • Following triage, victims are moved to treatment area

Psychological Triage

A
  • 4 keys to gauging mental hlth impact:
    > extreme & widepsread property damage
    > serious & ongoing financial problems
    > high prevalance of trauma in form of injuries, threat to life, & loss of life
    > when human intent caused the disaster
  • In addition, panic during the disaster, horror, separation from family, & relocation or displacement may play a part
